China Sanya Yacht Import & Export Trade Association

Cheoy Lee / CL Yachts

Association visit

Cheoy Lee is a fifth-generation family business with more than 150 years of continuous operation, originating in Shanghai. It is unusual among Chinese builders in running commercial shipbuilding and yacht building side by side.

Commercial — tugs are the established strength, alongside crew boats, ferries, harbour craft and pilot boats.

Yachts — the CL Yachts production series covers CLB65, CLB72, CLB80, CLB88 and CLX96. The CLB72 (23.44 m, in production since 2018) is the best-selling model and one of the first launched under the CL Yachts brand. The CLB88 (27.1 m, since 2022) was the brand's first from-scratch model, designed with Milan-based Jozeph Forakis, and won a GOOD DESIGN Award. The CLX96 (29.26 m, since 2021) introduced a plumb-bow look referencing the yard's commercial shipbuilding heritage. Alongside these sits custom work including the 127 Discovery at 38.71 m.

Output runs roughly four to six production boats and one to two custom projects a year. Production sales are managed through a global network of regional partners and dealers, while custom superyacht work is handled on a project basis. On new development, the yard's stated position is that the specification and design stage determines everything, with substantial effort moved forward into digital design and concurrent engineering; a new model typically takes two to three years from concept.
